Description

No. 1 (Chancery House) and No. 5, Effingham Street, are a house dating from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The building is rendered with a slate roof. It is three storeys high, featuring moulded cill bands and a cornice parapet to the roof, with stacks positioned centrally to the right. The fenestration is regular, with five sash windows on the second and first floors, set within raised surrounds. The ground floor features two large bow windows. The central doorway has six raised and fielded panels, with the central two now glazed, above a rectangular fanlight and a heavy cornice supported by console brackets. A three-storey extension projects to the left, and a two-storey extension to the right. The property was marked on Collard and Hursts' map of 1822.
