Description
The Rising Sun is an 18th-century public house, altered in the mid-19th century. It is located on the west side of Effingham Street, Ramsgate, and its site was marked on a map of Ramsgate from 1735. The building is constructed of stock brick, with the front elevation painted and rendered. It has a plain tiled roof and a double-range plan. The building is three storeys high and comprises two separate sections. The front elevation features a rendered ground floor and a modillion eaves cornice, with heavier moulding on the left-hand building. There are stacks to the end on the left and to the front right, with a hipped roof. The second floor has two sash windows; the first floor has four segmental sash windows. The ground floor has three-light mullioned and transomed windows with plate glass, and doors of six panels with rectangular fanlights on the left and right. A central recessed half-glazed door leads inside, and a semi-circular headed passageway is located at the end on the right, with a half-glazed door behind leading to a projecting section. The building was marked as ‘The Sun’ on Collard and Hursts' 1822 map.
