Description

This is a terrace of nine houses built around 1822-36 in Ramsgate. The houses are constructed of stock brick with a slate roof. They are three storeys high with a basement, and feature a continuous sill band to the first floor, a cornice, and a parapet, although the parapet is partly damaged. The chimney stacks are arranged to the left. Each house has a full-height bow window. Numbers 1, 2, 5, 8, and 9 have two-over-two sash windows on each floor, while numbers 3, 4, 6, and 7 have three-over-three sash windows. All windows have rendered surrounds. The doors, which are a mix of panelled and half-glazed styles, are located to the right of the bow windows and are set within semi-circular double rebated surrounds with rendered heads. Low, spear-headed railings define the basement areas, and garden dividing fences are present. Although the fenestration creates a unified appearance, the terrace was constructed in four blocks over a decade, and the number of windows per house varies (4, 6, 2, 6, 4). The terrace was once known as Victoria Place; J. C. Eddels lived at number 5 while developing the remainder of Vale Square.
