Description

The Old Curiosity Shop, located at 9 Harbour Street in Broadstairs, is a building dated 1588, although its facade is from the 18th century and has undergone modern alterations. The front elevation features three storeys, with stucco on the upper two levels and painted brick on the second storey. The roof is slate and half-hipped at one end. There is one casement window and a simple doorcase.

On the right side elevation, there is a second-floor sash window with intact glazing bars and a three-light bay window spanning the ground and first floors. Attached to the right is an L-wing that has been altered to three storeys, with the second storey dating from the 20th century and being tile-hung. The lower two storeys are made of painted brick and have an old tiled roof. This section includes one sash window with intact glazing bars and two casement windows.

The early 19th-century doorcase features a flat hood, reeded architrave, and rosettes. Inside, the building has exposed beams, batten panelling, and a well that is reputed to have concealed smuggled goods. Additionally, there is a sandstone door lintel from Holy Trinity Church in Margate incorporated into the rear wall, which bears the inscription "God is my Conscience" beneath the Invicta crest held between two scrolls.
