Description

53 High Street is a house that now operates as a house and restaurant. It dates from the 16th century and late 17th century, with restoration in the mid-20th century. The building is timber framed and clad with beaded weather boarding and applied timber with plaster infill on the front elevation, while the left return is covered with weather boarding. It has a plain tiled roof and an L-shaped plan, with the current entrance front featuring two framed bays that likely represent a former return wing.

The house stands two storeys high on a plinth, with a bresummer fascia and a moulded cornice leading to a roof that is hipped to the left, accommodating the return wing. There are hipped dormers and stacks at the rear left and right, positioned in front of the ridge. The first floor has two three-light leaded mullioned casements with a central single light, and the ground floor features two three-light mullioned casements, the left one accompanied by sidelights. The central door is half-glazed and set in a moulded surround, topped with an enriched cornice and console brackets that support a segmental pediment adorned with strapwork and a central cartouche featuring a lion head.

Inside, the house has a clasped purlin roof and leaded mullioned lights, some of which contain coloured glass. The full frame of the building is visible. Notably, the house has been associated with supposed hauntings that were investigated by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the BBC.
