Description

Number 2, The White Horse, is a public house that has been converted into a house and shop. It dates from around 1700, with alterations made in the early 19th century and an extension added in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of painted brick and features plain tiled roofs.

The main range is two storeys high, set on a plinth, and has irregular bonding, boxed eaves, and a Dutch gable on the right return. There are stacks located at the rear left and the end right of the building. The first floor has three sash windows, while the ground floor features three canted bay windows, along with evidence of earlier blocked window spaces. Two margin-light glazed and panelled doors are located to the centre left, framed by a moulded surround with pilasters and a cornice. An identical single door and surround can be found at the end right. The date 1960 is inscribed in the pedimented gable at the right return, indicating a restoration.

The 19th-century addition to the left is also two storeys high, with a curved frontage that faces the road corner. It has regular fenestration, featuring three segmental-headed sashes on the first floor and two on the ground floor, along with a central half-glazed door that has a flat hood and a gauged roundel on the left return, which includes the White Horse symbol.

Attached to the corner of the building is a late 19th-century cast iron lamp bracket, adorned with scrolled decoration and an original finial, although it now holds a late 20th-century electric lamp. In the front court, there is a cast iron hand pump with an open pumphead and a swept handle.
