Description

The Clock House is a Grade II* listed building located at Ramsgate Royal Harbour, built in 1817. It was designed by Benjamin Wyatt and George Louch, with alterations made by John Rennie. The structure is made of ashlar stone and features a slate roof. It stands two storeys high and has three bay arcades on the ground floor wings, along with a plat band, cornice, and parapet. There are chimney stacks at both ends of the building.

The central projecting tower has a two-storey arched opening, with the band serving as imposts. The hipped roof is adorned with a triglyph frieze and cornice, and it includes a square clock turret with a dentil cornice, an open arcaded belfry, and a weather vane. Each wing has three metal casement windows, while the first floor features a central Diocletian window. The ground floor has tripartite glazing bar sash windows, a central panelled door with sidelights in a round-headed surround, and boarded two-storey doors on the end elevations.

The rear elevation mirrors the front but lacks the central Diocletian window. Inside, the building has fine, simple interiors with trussed rafter roofs. It was originally fitted with a brass solar meridian line, which was stolen in the mid-1970s. The central tower contains a stone domed clock room. The varying upper floor levels suggest that Wyatt's original design intended for single-storey wings, with Rennie adding the upper floors later. The Clock House now serves as a museum and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution station, having previously functioned as a storehouse and offices.
