Description

The Obelisk is an obelisk constructed between 1822 and 1823 by John Shaw, made of Dunleary stone and standing fifty-two and a half feet high. It features inscriptions in both English and Latin, commemorating George the Fourth, King of Great Britain and Ireland. The obelisk was erected by the inhabitants and visitors of Ramsgate, along with the Directors and Trustees of the Harbour, as a grateful record of the King's gracious decision to select Ramsgate as the port for his embarkation on September 25, 1821, and his happy return on November 8, 1821.
