Description
The Scenic Railway at Dreamland is a Grade II* listed timber lattice structure built to support a winding, elongated double loop of iron tracks, measuring approximately 1.2 kilometers in total length. The railway is oriented from north-west to south-east and is situated just south of the cinema. The superstructure features non-standard upright timbers, each about 15 centimeters square, which are braced by similarly non-standard strutting. The metal rails are laid on a timber bed, equipped with side panels that facilitate the 'side-friction' mechanism to keep the cars on the tracks. At the north end of the track, there is an engine house housing the electrically-operated machinery and pulleys that operate the continuous steel rope used to pull the cars up the inclines. As of 2010, a section of the superstructure towards the south-east end of the railway is missing due to significant damage from a fire in 2008, which also destroyed the train shed located in the center of the track where the cars were previously stored.
