Description
The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady Star of the Sea, built between 1930 and 1931 by Sir Giles Scott and completed in 1961, is located on Broadstairs Road in Broadstairs. The church is constructed of flint with stone dressings and features a pantiled roof.
The north tower has two narrow lancets and a chequered brick tympanum set within a tall blank arch on all faces. The nave is broad and has seven bays, resembling a domestic structure, with four-light windows and an open trussed roof. The second bay from the west opens to a transeptal Sacred Heart altar on the north side and a similar transeptal Lady Chapel on the south side, each with a two-light window. The westernmost bays function as shallow transept-like 'chapels', containing the confessional on the north and the baptistry on the south.
To the west, beyond a broad round unchamfered arch, lies the narthex with a gallery above. The church has an immensely high apsidal chancel, which is illuminated from the east and west, and a low broad chancel arch. The altar rails and pulpit are splendidly carved in a 17th-century style, while the pews are of simple design.
