Description
This is a large, detached house located on Shakespeare Road in Birchington. It was built around 1912 and designed by Owen C Little in the Neo Queen Anne style. The house is constructed of brown brick in a Sussex bond, with red brick window dressings, a wooden cornice, a doorcase, and a hipped tiled roof topped with two brick chimneystacks. The property has two storeys and attics, and is arranged with seven bays. The front elevation has narrow eight-pane sashes, while other elevations feature wider 12-pane sashes. Two hipped dormers with six-pane casements are present on the front elevation. A wooden modillion eaves cornice runs around the roof. The central five bays project forward. The first floor of the central section features a round-headed niche with a keystone and a lead sculpture of a woman in 18th-century dress. A wide wooden doorcase with a curved pediment, fluted pilasters, and a semi-circular fanlight provides access to the entrance. Quoins are visible at the corners of the building. An east-facing projection runs along one side, featuring a hipped roof. The rear elevation is recessed in the centre and includes two dormers and French windows with a tiled verandah supported by eight Tuscan columns. All first-floor windows have shutters. Stringcourses and quoins define the projecting wings. The interior, which has not been inspected, is reported to contain contemporary Queen Anne style panelling, fireplaces, and a staircase of fine quality.
