Description
Fair Outlook is a bungalow built between 1872 and 1873 by John Taylor, possibly on land purchased by John Pollard Seddon. The walls are faced with stone and feature a framework of lacing courses and quoins made of special bricks. The building is single-storey and has sash windows with horns and no glazing bars. The long east elevation has five windows, and at the north end, there are four steps leading to a gabled stone and brick porch that includes side benches and a pair of half-glazed two-panel doors. The south end features a wide gable with overhanging eaves supported by brackets, and a triangular-headed sash window is positioned above a lean-to against the ground floor. The ground floor has a central half-glazed door, flanked on each side by one sash window and one small window. There is a northwest tower made of brick and stone topped with a pyramidal roof. Fair Outlook is considered to be either the third, fourth, or fifth bungalow built in the British Isles, located in either Westgate or Birchington-on-Sea, and is one of the very few early examples still standing. Taylor's bungalows utilized his patented building materials and methods, designed to combat rising damp.
