Description
Woodcote is a bungalow located on William Street in Torphins, built in 1890 by John Morgan and later extended to the west with a sunroom in the mid-20th century. This single storey and attic building features a 6-bay design in the Canadian Arts and Crafts style, showcasing fine interior details. It is constructed of brick with mock half-timbering, a deep granite base course, and a cavetto eaves course, along with timber and brick mullions.
The south elevation presents three original gambrel-roofed bays on the right, featuring a tall timber-braced gable at the center with a 6-light canted window leading to a panelled gablehead that has a 4-hole pigeon loft at the apex. To the left, there is a tripartite window, and to the right, a flat-roofed extension. A single window is located to the left, followed by another gabled bay with a canted window and braced gablehead, and a later flat-roofed bowed bay with a 6-light window angled to the outer left.
The north elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a gabled entrance bay that is recessed to the right of center. It features a canopied, part-glazed panelled timber door flanked by narrow lights. To the left, there are four windows with two flat-roofed dormers above, and a decoratively-astragalled circular window on the right return of the gambrel roof. There is also a projecting gable with various elements to the outer left and an additional bay to the right with a garage door.
The east elevation displays a variety of elements, including a multi-light flat-roofed bowed bay to the left and a brick chimney breast piercing a set-back gable, which has a tiny window in the gablehead.
Inside, the bungalow features a fine decorative scheme, including various timber-lined rooms and ceilings, fire surrounds, and overmantels. There are cupboards with leaded coloured glass panels and cast-iron radiators. A timber-balustered dog-leg staircase in the kitchen leads to a maid's room. The building is topped with green slates, brick stacks, cans, decorative terracotta ridge tiles, and a cast-iron finial.
