Description
The Delmonte and The Galleon Tower Bungalows comprise a bungalow dating from 1881 to 1882, designed by John Pollard Seddon, possibly on land purchased by him in the late 1860s. The bungalow is stuccoed and features two principal rooms facing the sea, a central spine corridor, a north-west tower, and a south lean-to, originally featuring sgraffito panels. The lean-to was extended and reconstructed in 1911 for a bathroom and subsequently furnished with a flat roof. Most windows are 19th-century sash windows with horns and small panes at the top and bottom. The west elevation has two triple sashes, a single sash, a small window, and a converted sash, with a lean-to verandah surviving only at the north end as a porch roof, though with north and south steps to the verandah path. The east elevation incorporates similar windows. The tower has a pyramidal roof with a finial and retains 19th-century windows on the south and west sides, but a larger 20th-century window has been inserted on the north side. On the north elevation, a wide gable with overhanging eaves set on brackets gives way to two wide canted bays merging with a narrow, central arched recess, featuring 20th-century single pane windows. A flight of steps from the garden leads up to a screened passage and a four-panel door. The interior includes an entrance lobby with a mosaic floor, possibly made by Mr Rust; an octagonal centre hall; four-panel doors; and bedrooms with 19th-century fireplace surrounds. The north-east and north-west rooms share a plan identical to rooms in White Cliffe, each featuring alcoves in the outer walls. These are among the earliest extant late 19th-century bungalows in Britain and are one of four tower bungalows designed by Seddon.
