Description

Numbers 10-12 and 13-14 Davy Place are a terrace of bungalows built between 1962 and 1963 as part of a housing estate for elderly persons by the former Loddon Rural District Council. The architects were Tayler and Green. The bungalows are constructed of red, black, yellow-grey, and dapple light brick with ornamental treatment to the gable ends. They have orange and brown pantiled roofs with wood bargeboards, brick chimney stacks with angled concrete coping and clay pots, and rush eaves. Rainwater pipes run vertically without swan-necks. The plans are wide, approximately 13 meters. The site incorporates garages below the bungalows on the south side, taking advantage of the change in ground level due to its former use as a gravel pit. The elevations vary according to orientation, but a typical example features a recessed entrance, a half-glazed door flanked by white-painted wood trelliswork extending over subsidiary windows, a main three-light steel casement window, and a boarded exterior store with a glazed panel. While the interior planning is noteworthy, the individual units lack special architectural features. Davy Place exemplifies the architects' attention to detail and use of vernacular forms, rather than pastiche. The streetscape is carefully composed, incorporating a terrace of four bungalows on the north side, a set-back paved square fronted by a single bungalow, a day room, and a two-story warden’s house. Opposite, raised gable ends are visible, with linked brick crinkle-crankle walls screening the gardens. These bungalows form part of a larger estate, which includes numbers 1-16 Davy Place, a common room, numbers 5-9 High Bungay Road, numbers 6, 8, and 10 Low Bungay Road, and numbers 3-13 Davy Terrace, Low Bungay Road. The overall design demonstrates the architects’ 'picturesque' approach, responding to a semi-urban setting. The scheme won a Ministry of Housing Medal in 1964 and a Civic Trust Award in 1965.
