Description

House. Built in the early 18th century, with alterations in the early 19th century. The house is brick-built with a slate and tile roof. It is a Queen Anne house with a symmetrical west front of two storeys and an attic, featuring a 2-1-2 window arrangement. The slate roof has wide eaves and a plaster soffit, and it incorporates three dormers with arched lead roofs. The red brick walls are in a header bond, with a high plinth, a stone band at first floor level, and stone cills. The window openings have cambered arches which are now covered with cement and feature keystones. The windows are sash windows in reveals. The early 19th-century doorway has a large moulded canopy supported by three-quarter Doric columns, with a simple frame enclosing a Gothic fanlight and a six-panelled door. On each side of the doorway are walls with a dropped curve from the band level, continuing to level tops extending to simple piers with stone ball finials. The south elevation, featuring two windows, shows early 19th-century alterations, including a hipped slate roof, two large sashes on the east side, and a filled window above a French window on the west side. The east elevation incorporates enlarged early 19th-century window openings, although the roof is tiled. There are two 20th-century flat-roofed dormers and a small half-glazed door centrally positioned below the staircase window. A single-storey service wing extends eastwards with a tile roof, and incorporates a section of upper floor from the 20th century, featuring tile-hung walls and a flat roof. The north elevation is largely characterised by walls containing thirteen narrow horizontal bands of flint.
