Description

Northwood House is a Queen Anne house dating from circa 1700. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with a tile roof. The building is symmetrical on its south front, which is two storeys and an attic, set upon a raised basement, and features a 2.3.2 window arrangement. A recessed central section is flanked by projecting wings, with blank panels on the inner faces of these wings, representing former windows. The roof is hipped, with three dormers, each containing a casement window and coved plaster eaves.

The brickwork includes a first-floor band and cambered openings to the ground floor, set within a high plinth. Sashes are set in exposed frames, and small basement windows have casements. The doorway is topped by a pediment hood on carved brackets, sheltering a plain opening with a fanlight and half-glazed double doors with narrow side panes. A stone-paved area extends before the entrance, leading to a flight of six steps which curve outwards at their base and are bordered by plain wrought-iron rails.

The north elevation displays a regular arrangement of windows. The west side has irregular fenestration, including a tall staircase window and a mid-19th century half-octagonal ground floor bay. The east side adjoins an older house, which is rendered externally and has varying floor levels. Attached are minor brick and tile outbuildings.

Inside, the hall and two rooms retain original panelling. The staircase features dado panelling, and throughout the house are panelled doors within architraves, an old fireplace, and other details from the 18th century.
