Description

The Church of St. Mary the Less is a parish church that dates from the 12th to the 15th centuries, with further construction in 1842 and restoration in 1893. It features a Norman nave that includes a blocked clerestory window, an Early English chancel, and north and south aisles from the 14th century. The tower, built in 1842, is located at the west end of the south aisle and consists of three stages. The lowest stage has flint walls with flat buttresses and corbelled eaves supporting a tile roof, leading to a narrower bell stage with boarding on an earlier timber frame (removed from the nave), topped by a tiled broach spire.

The church has a tile roof that extends over the aisles, and its walls are made of flint rubble, with rendering on the chancel and north aisle, and stone dressings for the buttresses, windows, and plinth. The windows include restoration lancets and coupled lights, with one Perpendicular window located to the south of the chancel.

Inside, the nave arcade features two arches on each side, staggered to accommodate a shorter south aisle. The north side includes a rood-stair within the east end of the nave wall. The arcade's shafts are octagonal with half octagonal end supports, and they have moulded caps and bases. Notable interior elements include a much restored 15th-century screen, 16th-century linenfold panelling in front of the reading desks, and a Jacobean pulpit. The font, described as 'Pexpendicular', dates from 1891.
