Description
The Church of St. Mary is a redundant parish church dating from the 12th century, with a chancel from the 13th century. The west tower was rebuilt in 1807 by William Moss and the church underwent restoration between 1881 and 1884, with the south porch added in 1889. The building is constructed of rendered flint and rubble, incorporating some re-used Roman brick, while the tower is made of red brick and features a plain tiled roof. The church comprises a chancel, nave, south-west tower, and south porch. The lower stage of the tower is from the 12th century and includes Roman tiled quoins, while the upper stage is battlemented. There is a 12th-century west doorway with zig-zag moulding. The nave has either 14th-century cusped lancets or 19th-century lancets. The chancel is stepped in and down from the nave, featuring a paired lancet east window and two lancets in the north wall. The exposed quoins of the 12th-century chancel were extended eastwards in the 13th century. The interior was not inspected at the time of the survey.
