Description

Claxfield Farmhouse is a Wealden hall house, dating from the 16th century. It is timber framed, with exposed, close-studded timbering and plaster infill, and has a plain tiled roof. The original house comprised four framed bays, with a later framed wing added to the rear right side. The house has two storeys, with jettied end bays and a flying wall plate over the two central bays supported by arched braces. The hall bay on the right has arched bracing, while the left hall bay has a mid-rail on the ground floor. A central projecting semi-dormer features pendant bargeboards. The roof is hipped with gablets and stacks positioned to the left and offset, projecting at the end on the left side. The first floor has three metal casements. There are glazing bar sashes in a segmental bay window to the left and in the central projecting gable, and a wooden casement to the right. Evidence of blocked mullioned windows remains on both floors. A door consisting of six raised and fielded panels is located on the right side. The interior retains a crown post roof.
