Description
64 and 65 Preston Street are a pair of houses with shop premises, dating from around the mid-19th century, possibly 1849, which is the date associated with the nearby assembly room known as The Drill Hall. The buildings are constructed of Flemish bond stock brick and feature a slate roof with gabled ends, along with brick axial stacks.
The layout is a double depth plan range that may have originally consisted of three houses. The left and center houses have later 19th-century shop fronts, while the right-hand house (No 65) appears to be a single residence now. There is also a late 20th-century extension on the right-hand end (No 66).
The exterior is two storeys high with an attic and has a three-bay front that includes brick pilasters, a moulded stucco cornice, and a parapet. The 19th-century windows are 12-pane sashes, and the ground floor left and center feature two late 19th or early 20th-century shop fronts with pilasters, entablatures with blind cases, and glazed and panelled doors. Behind the parapet, there are three large 20th-century flat roof dormers. The rear elevations and interiors were not inspected.
