Description
The Church of St Peter is a parish church that dates from the 13th century, with alterations from the 16th century and restoration, including the addition of a spire, carried out in 1877-1878 by Joseph Clarke. It is constructed of flint and rubble stone, topped with a plain tiled roof and a shingled spire. The church features a chancel and nave, with a belfry and spire located at the west end, a north-west vestry, and a south porch. The west end was rebuilt in 1877 and includes two large pinnacled buttresses and a restored 13th-century roll-moulded doorway with a quatrefoil above it. There is a relieving arch leading to the belfry and diagonal offset buttresses. The south porch is half-timbered, while the windows are a mix of 16th-century Perpendicular and 19th-century styles, except for a single cusped light in the north nave wall. The exposed quoins of the nave are incorporated into the widened chancel walls, and there is a lean-to vestry at the north-west. Inside, there is no chancel arch, and the nave roof features three crown posts, while the chancel roof has two crown posts. The interior includes 19th-century fittings and furniture, with the exception of a large Romanesque Purbeck marble font on renewed shafts and a timbered gallery at the west end.
