Description

This traditional agricultural barn dates from the 18th century, with some timbers possibly from the 17th century or earlier and some 20th-century alterations. It is timber-framed on a brick plinth and clad in weatherboarding, much of which is tarred on the north and west sides. The roof, which was reported to have been thatched in the past, is currently covered with 20th-century asbestos sheeting. The barn is aligned east to west and consists of four bays, featuring a cart entrance with double doors located in the penultimate bay to the west.

Inside, the wall frame includes a midrail and jowled upright posts. The east end has two curved braces that are likely from the 17th century or earlier. Some later boarding has been added to the interior of the west end, but where this is absent, the original wall frame is visible, including lath panels. The tie beams are supported by curved braces. The roof structure consists of rafters without purlins, with original rafters at the east and west ends, while the center rafters have been replaced. Some collars, mainly made of poles, have been added later. This barn is substantially complete from the 18th century, retains some earlier timbers, and holds significant group value within the village center.
