Description

This is a house, dating back to the 16th century, with significant extensions circa 1643 and in the 20th century. It is timber-framed with red brick infill and a plain tiled roof. Originally comprising four framed bays, it was extended by one bay around 1643, along with a contemporary service wing to the rear. Later wings were added to the rear in the 18th and early 20th centuries. The house has two storeys and a basement. The left-hand end bay was once jettied and features an attic with two hipped dormers. It has kneelered parapet gables and stacks to the centre left and both ends, each with two diagonally set flues. The windows are mullioned, with four 3-light windows on the first floor and four 3-light windows on the ground floor, along with one 2-light window on the right-hand side of the first floor. A plank and stud door is set within a moulded surround within a central, two-storey porch, featuring bargeboarded and pendant gables. Internally, the house features a stone fireplace in the hall, oak panelling, and chamfered and moulded doors and doorways. A mullioned window to the rear has carved surrounds and console brackets. The original internal layout has been significantly altered. The brick used for the infill and extension was taken from the demolished mansion of the Drury family in Lynsted Street, which had been pulled down by the Huggeson family around 1643. The porch has an inscription reading “H and MH and JH” on the posts, referencing 1643 and John, James, and William Huggeson, along with James and Mary Huggeson. A garden wall extends 10 yards from the left end of the house, standing at 8 feet high, and partially encloses the front garden at 3 feet high for a further 10 yards to a 20th-century gateway. The gateways and wall on the right are not considered to be of particular interest.
