Description
The Swanley War Memorial is a Portland stone monument with a bronze sculpture and plaques, dating from 1922. It stands as an eloquent record of the impact of tragic world events on the town and is designated at Grade II for its historical and artistic merits.
The memorial features an allegorical bronze statue by Louis Frederick Roslyn of South Kensington, titled "The Spirit of Sacrifice," depicting a draped, winged female figure standing on a globe; she holds a laurel wreath and a downward-pointing sword. The statue is mounted atop a tall Portland stone obelisk, which rises from a square plinth with a two-step base. An inscription on the east face commemorates the men of Swanley who died in the Great War (1914-1918) and includes a bronze wreath. A bronze plaque below dedicates the memorial to Staff Paymaster Joseph T. Gedge, the first British officer to fall in the Great War, who was killed on HMS Amphion in August 1914. A further plaque commemorates the men of Swanley Parish who died on active service during World War II (1939-1945), listing 28 names. Two identical plaques on the north and south faces list the names of 104 men who died in relief format.
The memorial was initially unveiled at Swanley Cross in March 1922, funded by public subscription. Roslyn was a prolific war memorial sculptor, and a model of this memorial was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1919. It was moved to its current location and rededicated in October 1980.
