Description

Highlands Farmhouse is an L-shaped building that dates back to the 17th century or earlier. It was refaced in the early 19th century and is two storeys high with a stuccoed exterior and a tiled roof. There is a weatherboarded extension at the rear. The windows are arranged irregularly, featuring a mix of casements and sash windows with intact glazing bars. The entrance has a simple doorcase, and some exposed beams can be seen inside. This site was one of the two original Saxon settlements in Swanley and was a minor manor during Norman times when the land belonged to Ghent Abbey. It is believed that King Stephen granted the land to his supporter William of Ypres, who then gave it to Ghent Abbey, which held it from 1135 to 1203.
