Description

Downs Cottages (Nos 1, 2 and 3) and The Old Cafe represent a building with origins possibly dating back to the 15th or early 16th century, although the current structure largely appears to be from the late 16th to early 17th century. Originally named Nemefield, it was initially a single house, later extended to the rear and divided into three cottages. From after 1860, it served as the village Post Office and stores. The building is timber-framed, with the first floor now pebble-dashed and the ground floor brick-faced. It has four windows, two of which are sliding casement windows, and an external brick chimneystack. The rear elevation features four gables. Nos 1 and 2 Downs Cottages incorporate a blocked inglenook fireplace.
