Description

This is a 16th century building, originally a farmhouse, now a separate property. It has undergone significant alterations in the 18th century and later. The building is L-shaped, with a timber-frame structure at the rear which is rendered; it has steeply-pitched gable-ended tiled roofs. The north elevation is two storeys high with an attic, and originally had three windows, although the central window on the first floor is now blocked. The roof is steeply pitched with end chimneys and two square dormers. The front is faced with 18th century brick, and features late 19th or early 20th century projecting canted bay windows on both the ground and first floors. Inside, the building retains massive stopped chamfered beams with run-out stops on both floors. The property is associated with the Colgate family, who emigrated to the United States for religious reasons and are known for producing soap and toothpaste.
