Description
The Walled Garden at Halstead Place School is a late 18th-century structure. It features three sides made of red brick in an irregular bond, while one side is constructed from flint with brick dressings. There is also a mid 19th-century extension made of red brick in rat trap and English bond brickwork. The garden has a rectangular plan with an L-shaped spur extending to the southwest. The south, west, and east walls stand nine to ten feet high, built from handmade bricks joined with lime mortar in an irregular bond pattern, and are accented with brick pilasters at regular intervals.
The south side includes a cambered arched entrance that has a 20th-century ledged and braced door. The east side features a cambered entrance flanked by pilasters, leading to a wide opening to the north, approximately ten feet wide, with square brick gatepiers. The west side also has a cambered entrance opposite the wide entrance in the east wall, which is blocked with 20th-century brickwork. The north wall is made of brick at the corners, but the rest is slightly lower and features brick curved coping along with brick pilasters at regular intervals. The L-shaped spur to the southwest primarily consists of mid 19th-century rat trap bond, with a section of mid 19th-century English bond brickwork at the corner. This spur is depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1868. The garden wall is a rectangular structure from the 18th century, with a mid 19th-century extension, and it is grouped with the listed stables.
