Description
The Brasted War Memorial is a neoclassical shrine built as an archway, set into the front wall of the village hall (built in 1910 and not listed). It stands on the north side of the main road through the village, near the turning to Toys Hill. The memorial is constructed of Portland stone ashlar columns which support a broken pediment. Within the archway is an elaborate Portland stone plaque set into local Kentish Ragstone. Above the plaque is a crown, and laurel leaf swags are draped to each side. The plaque is inscribed with the words "IN HONOURED AND/ GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE/ OF THE MEN OF BRASTED WHO/ FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)/ 1939-1945 (NAMES)/ FAITHFUL UNTO/ DEATH." Photographs confirm that the plaque was extended downwards after the Second World War to include the later inscription. Below the inscription is a small projecting shelf supported by a corbel, and brackets for wreaths.
