Description

The Rock House is an irregular house, largely dating from the 16th century. The front features a two-storey section with four windows on the left, which oversails at the left side. The right part projects and has a gabled one-window design, oversailing on three sides with dragon beams that are now boxed in. Old brackets are visible on the left. The roof has a high pitch, with tiles that were renewed in the 19th century and a bargeboard added to the gable. The eaves are moulded and plastered. The entire front is stuccoed with incised lines. The windows are casements under hoodmoulds, except for those below the jetties, with the central ground floor window featuring Tudor heads to the lights. There is a Tudor arched doorway with a hoodmould leading to a traceried door. The front underwent a mid-19th century restoration. Under the right part, there is a retaining wall made of coursed galletted rubble with red brick quoins. There are modern extensions on the left. Inside, there is much exposed timber and a restored inglenook. The ground floor front includes some late 18th century and Regency painted panelling, and some flights of a staircase dating from around 1700. There is a 17th century arcaded brick cellar built onto a rock-hewn chapel of transitional appearance, dating from around 1200. The Rock House, along with its stables, cobbled yard, and walls, forms a group.
