Description
Chipstead Chapel is a former Non-Conformist chapel, which has more recently been used for storage. It dates from the early 17th century or earlier and features a timber-framed structure, with the roof and rear wall still intact, embedded within a mid-19th century chapel. The exterior has three sides rendered with incised lines that mimic masonry, while the rear elevation retains its timber-framed appearance with plaster infill set on a brick plinth. The chapel has a steeply-pitched roof covered with both plain and pointed tiles, complemented by fretted wooden bargeboards.
The front elevation includes two round-headed windows with moulded architraves and marginal glazing, along with a central doorcase featuring a cornice and paired end brackets. The end elevation has two blocked round-headed windows and a roundel in the gable that contains a cross within a quatrefoil. Inside, three walls do not show any visible timber-framing, but the roof structure is reported to be made of oak, featuring either queen post or strut construction, with heavy projecting rafters that are laid flat and of a large section.
