Description

Ivy Cottage (Hanging Bank) is a 16th-century cottage with a lean-to rear addition dating to the 17th century. In more recent times, it was raised to two storeys. It was formerly divided into two dwellings. The cottage has two windows and a high-pitched tiled roof with end chimneys, one constructed of old brick with overlapping shafts. There is also one flat dormer window. The first floor is tile-hung, while the ground floor is of galleted coursed rubble with red brick dressings and a plinth coping. Modern, three-light, leaded casement windows have been installed. A plank door, set in a stout frame and covered by a hipped pent tiled modern hood, provides access. A small, modern extension is present. The interior features much exposed timber, some of which is re-used and may have originated from a ship, identifiable by its shape and moulding. Two small inglenooks, old plank floors, and swell-head posts are also notable features.
