Description
Chains Farmhouse is a 16th-century building with 18th-century additions, located off Ide Hill Road. The garden front features two storeys and four windows, topped by a high-pitched roof that is half-hipped at the ends and has been renewed with machine tiles. There is an off-centre ridge stack that has been partly rebuilt. The first floor is tile hung, while the ground floor is constructed of galleted random rubble with brick dressings and a brick-coped plinth. The entrance door consists of five panels and is situated under a gabled, bracketed hood. Various casement windows are present, and some visible timber framing can be seen below the right hip of the roof. The entrance front, which was formerly the back, retains part of the original low-sweeping roof to the left of the 18th-century extension, built with similar materials except for the end piece, which is made of red brick with blue headers. The first-floor windows are sash windows with glazing bars set in flush, moulded frames.
