Description

Clenches Farm Barn is a building that dates from the late 18th century and was originally a barn before becoming a bottling plant for dairy. It features a timber frame, except for the lower part of the south end wall, which is made of an earlier Kentish ragstone wall. The barn is clad in weatherboarding, with some older boards visible on the east side, and has a half-hipped tiled roof.

On the exterior, there are original cart entrances in the third bay from the north, which have 19th-century cart doors on the west side and curbing stones. The second bay to the north on the west side has a late 20th-century shutter-fronted door, while the south end has a late 20th-century window inserted below the half-hip.

Inside, the barn has six bays. The upright posts have jowls with a curved profile and are supported by curved braces to the tie beams. The wall frame features staggered midrails and diagonal braces. The roof structure includes a queen post with angled side ties and a king post above, along with two tiers of purlins and diagonal braces.

Historically, this barn is depicted on the Plan of 1796 by William and Edward Peckham and appears on an estate map related to the conveyance of the Kippington estate from Sir Charles Farnaby to Francis Motley Austin, who was a cousin of Jane Austen, in 1797.
