Description
The barn and attached outbuildings at Larkins Farm date from the 16th century or earlier. The barn is timber-framed and weatherboarded, with a plain tile roof that has a hip to the west. It has four bays, with an entry in the second bay from the east. The north elevation contains three windows. The east gable features a ground-floor ledged door, a door to the first floor, and a loft door.
Inside the barn, the first, second, and fourth trusses from the east have crown posts with upward braces. There are mortices for former downward braces on the north side of the first and second trusses. The third truss has been altered. Other features include a collar purlin, old rafters, and old posts, except for the third post from the east on the north side. Tie beam braces are present on the second truss from the east. The west end wall framing has two large braces. The lower part of the barn is floored over.
The roof descends low over a weatherboarded outshut on the west, which has a stone plinth and a west wall with two small windows with timber shutters. The outshut contains three loose boxes divided by probably 19th-century partitions, and is floored over by a probably 19th-century timber ceiling with chamfered joists and beams. Extensions to the west outshut are situated on the north and south sides. A weatherboarded extension on the south has doorways on both the east and west ends, and a modern garage door in the south gable. The interior of the north extension has a brick floor at the north end, jowl posts which appear to have been partially cut back, and a later roof with a ridge piece. A brick and weatherboarded extension is located on the north side, with doorways on the east and west ends at the south. The interior of this extension also features a later roof with a ridge piece.
Attached to the north extension is a brick open-sided shed with a plain tile roof, hip to the east, and two bays. The south elevation is open-sided. Red brick stables are attached at right angles to the south extension of the barn outshut, with flared headers and a plain tile roof. The stables are one storey with a loft, and have a window and doorway on the south elevation. The interior has a stone coaled floor, a 19th-century timber ceiling with stopped and chamfered joists, a rear hay rack with an aperture from the loft, and four stalls with boarded partitions. A half door is located in the east gable, along with another loft door. Adjoining the stables is a western wing with brick rear and end walls and pairs of vehicular doors in the front wall. The interior features a 19th-century queen strut roof with a ridge piece. A boarded tack room is at the west end, containing a late 19th-century grate to a corner fireplace.
