Description

The Vicarage and Vicarage Flat above is a hall house of Wealden shape, dating from the 15th century or earlier, with significant alterations. The front elevation features two storeys and an attic with four windows. It has a high-pitched roof covered in graduated slates and an end chimney made of some old brick. There are four modern flat dormers and a skylight. The eaves soffit is very deep over the set-back central section. The entire front has been refaced in mathematical tiles during the 18th century and is now painted white. On the first floor, there are four modern casement windows, placed irregularly, while the ground floor has six sash windows, four of which retain their 18th-century glazing bars. A modern gabled porch is located at the center. Inside, the hall has had a first floor inserted, but remnants of the screens passage are visible, including two heavy wood-framed doorways with four-centred wood heads added somewhat later, along with a massive threshold below. Much of the timber is exposed, featuring a great tie beam and a crown post that has lost two braces, as well as old plank floors and several old brick fireplaces. There are also 19th-century extensions to the south. The house has been continuously used as a Vicarage since at least the 15th century and is notable as the birthplace of General Wolfe.
