Description

The Breaches is a large, sprawling house with elements from various periods, including a 16th-century framed structure. At the rear, there are modern brick and tile hung additions. To the right, facing the garden, is a 19th-century rendered octagonal splayed bay that rises two storeys. The front, which faces the road, features a small, symmetrical roughcast elevation from the 18th century, also two storeys high, with a continuous dentilled cornice and gutter, a ridge tile roof that includes two small leaded dormers, and a central ridge brick Tudor stack. In the centre, there is a square projection with a hip tiled roof. The ground floor has two 19th-century French windows and an 18th-century sash window with bars in the centre. Inside, the central part of the house showcases exposed beams and an inglenook fireplace, while the rest of the interior dates from the 18th century, with significant 19th-century and modern additions. The house was once home to John Bodicote, a friend of General Wolfe's parents, and Mrs. Hargreaves, who was the original "Alice" from "Alice in Wonderland," spent her final years here.
