Description

Quebec House is a historic property located in Quebec Square, Westerham. It was acquired by Mr. J B Learmong of Montreal and presented to the National Trust in 1917. General James Wolfe lived here during his early years. The house is now open to the public on certain days and features a small museum.

The core of the house is said to date back to 1501, but the current exterior is largely from the mid-17th century. The entrance front was altered in the 18th century and rebuilt in modern times to match the older design. The house is square, with two storeys and an attic on each side, featuring three bays topped by three equal gables with moulded brick coping and small ball finials on steps. It has high-pitched tiled roofs.

On the west side, there are two projecting chimney stacks made of brick and rubble stonework, each with three linked tall shafts, the middle one being diagonal. The walls are mainly brick, with first and second floor bands, a brick-coped rubble plinth, and some brick-dressed rubble masonry on the ground floor. The attic casements have square brick hoodmoulds, some of which are original. The other windows are sashes with glazing bars, including some from the 18th century and some modern replacements, along with a reproduction Georgian central door and doorcase. A lead pump dated 1792 is located at the back door.

Inside, much of the timber is exposed. The front part of the house is older, featuring Tudor work, including two stone fireplaces, panelling, old beams, and a blocked mullioned window in the former outside wall. The back part was added during the 17th-century remodelling. There is a mid-17th-century staircase with wainscoting and a chimney-piece of similar date, along with some fireplace surrounds. The downstairs back room has panelling from around 1700.
