Description
The Chimney at Horton Kirby Paper Mill is a Grade II listed structure, dated 1881, located in South Darenth. It is designed in an Italianate style resembling a campanile. The lower section is constructed of stock brick, while the upper part features red brick with stone dressings. Each face of the chimney has two long panels containing two blocked openings on four levels. The upper section is adorned with a moulded dentil cornice and includes two round-headed arches on each side, complete with keystones and a stone cornice supported by moulded brackets. The base consists of plain brick beneath a moulded cornice. In 1918, a 70-foot circular extension made of stock brick was added to the top to improve emissions dispersal, which was later reduced by half in the late 20th century; this extension is not considered of special interest. The Horton Kirby Paper Mill operated on this site from 1830 until 2003, previously housing an earlier flour mill.
