Description

This barn, located approximately 67 yards north of Stede Hill, dates from the late 17th century and has undergone alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of red brick with occasional grey headers, featuring parts of the north elevation in Flemish bond and the rest in a mixed bond. The roof is covered with plain tiles and the barn consists of two parallel ranges that are positioned at right angles to the road. It stands one and a half storeys high on a brick plinth, with a string course above which the wall is slightly recessed. The top of the string course is covered with sloping plain tiles.

On the north elevation, there are six ground-floor windows, which are two-light glazing-bar casements with brick voussoirs, small raised brick keystones, and relieving arches. There are also two 19th-century central buttresses, with the roof sloping down over full-height double barn doors. The street elevations feature six blocked ground-floor slit windows with double reveals, inner chamfered edges, and brick voussoirs. Each gable has two blocked first-floor windows with voussoirs and keystones, and the centre has two with 19th-century glazing-bar lights, while the outer sections have two slits. An octagonal brick pier is located at the left corner, and the brickwork continues to the south as the wall of a 19th-century cottage.

Inside, there is no clear sign of a floor. A broad brick arcade separates the two ranges, originally consisting of seven bays, although the central section has been removed, likely in the 19th century. The piers have moulded plinths and plain stone imposts, with semi-circular arches featuring deep voussoirs and raised brick keystones. The windows are set in broad recesses with deep sills and segmental heads. The roof has clasped and staggered but purlins, which have been much altered in the south range, while the north range has a 19th-century roof.
