Description

Teston Bridge is a road bridge located partly in the civil parish of West Farleigh, dating from the 14th or 15th century. It is constructed of coursed ragstone with ashlar coping along the parapet. The bridge features six round-headed arches, with three arches spanning the river; the central arch is taller, flanked by two slightly smaller arches to the west and one smaller arch at an angle to the east. The central arch has a double hollow chamfer, while the other arches have a single hollow chamfer, and the soffits are ashlared. There are six cutwaters on hollow-chamfered stone plinths on the south (upstream) side and four on the north side, which extend into the parapet to create refuges. The parapet may have been renewed at a later date. The three outer arches were rebuilt in the early 19th century, as noted by Jervoise in "The Ancient Bridges of the South of England" from 1930. Teston Bridge is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
