Description
The Hollingbourne War Memorial is located on the north side of Eyhorne Street, between the villages of Hollingbourne and Eyhorne Street. It features a rough-hewn granite Celtic cross set on a three-tier granite base, which sits on a low concrete plinth. After the Second World War, three wedge-shaped granite blocks were added to the front and sides of the lower tier of the base, with further additions made in 2006. The cross is enclosed by low walls made of Kentish ragstone, topped with concrete, and can be accessed via two stone steps.
The memorial bears an inscription in lead lettering on an incised panel on the front of the top tier, which reads: "SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ THROUGH THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." The names of those who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the middle tier, while the names of the fallen from the Second World War are on the front granite wedge. Additional names from both wars are inscribed on the two side wedges.
