Description

Lime Tree Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century, likely with a core from the 16th century or earlier, and with later alterations. The house is timber framed. The ground floor framing is exposed with rendered brick infilling. The first floor is hung with banded plain and fishscale tiles. It has approximately four timber-framed bays. The ground floor exhibits close studding in the left-end bay, and a second bay from the left shows close studding, possibly separately framed from the left-end bay. This section includes a former window sill just above ground level. The two right bays have thin studding and painted brick infilling with lacing pieces. A continuous jetty is supported by solid-spandrel brackets. The roof is hipped to the left with a gablet, and half-hipped to the right, with a half-hip jettied section. A brick gable end stack is located to the left, and a ridge stack is positioned at the left end of the right-central bay. The windows are irregular, with six casements including one 3-light window to the left end, a 2-light casement adjacent to it, one 4-light window to the left-central bay, a 2-light painted ovolo-moulded mullion window beside it, a 2-light casement under the stack, and a 4-light painted ovolo-moulded mullion window to the right end. A boarded door is set within an early 20th century timber-framed and rendered porch towards the right end. A short rear wing extends to the left, tile-hung on the first floor with a steeply pitched hipped roof and gablet. A painted brick lean-to connects to the gable end of the wing. The interior has not been inspected.
