Description

Old Cottage is a cottage dating from the early to mid-18th century, possibly around 1739. It has a timber frame with the ground floor rendered and the first floor tile-hung, topped by a plain tile roof. The building consists of two roughly equal-length timber-framed bays that were formerly separated by a partition. It stands two storeys high on a stone plinth and features a gabled roof. A large projecting red and grey brick stack is located at the left gable end. The cottage has irregular fenestration with two 3-light wooden casements on each floor and a ribbed door to the left of centre. There is an integral timber-framed lean-to at the rear and a short two-storey red brick rear wing from the late 19th century, which was extended in the late 20th century. Inside, the cottage showcases exposed framing, long cut jowls on the principal posts, and curved tension braces made from light scantling. The fireplace has plain brick jambs and a wooden bressumer. This cottage may be the one mentioned in a mortgage from 1739 as "new erected."
