Description
Guildstead Court is a house that dates back to the 15th century, with additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. The left section features a chequered pattern of red and grey brick, the central section is timber-framed with rendered infilling, and the right section is made of flint with brick dressings, all topped with plain tile roofs. The central section consists of four timber-framed bays; the hall has two unequal bays, with the larger bay open to the roof and the smaller likely containing a cross-passage and always floored over, creating a separate room on the first floor.
The left section, dating from the late 18th century, is positioned at right angles to the street and has two storeys plus a basement on a brick plinth, with a hipped roof facing the street. It features a tall brick stack on the right and one glazing-bar sash window on each floor, along with three glazing-bar sashes on the left return elevation. There is a later casement window in the basement.
The central section, originally from the 15th century but rebuilt in the 19th century, runs parallel to the left section and has two storeys with close-studded timber framing and archbraces to the tie-beam. The decorative framing above the tie-beam includes a slightly bracketed jetty halfway up the gable, and it has cusped bargeboards. A central brick ridge stack is present, along with a three-light leaded casement window on the first floor that has a bracketed canopy above it. A 20th-century ribbed door is located to the left under a 19th-century timber porch.
The right section is recessed and runs parallel to the road, also with two storeys and featuring a single-light leaded casement window on the first floor. Inside the central section, there are exposed beams and posts, along with a crown-post roof and carved 19th-century fireplaces.
