Description

Milstead Cottage is a house, formerly part of a row of houses, dating from the 15th or early 16th century, with later alterations from the 16th and 19th centuries. It is timber-framed with plaster infilling, and the left gable end is made of galletted stone. The roof is covered with plain tiles and is open in the hall area, consisting of two roughly equal bays with a storeyed bay at each end. The building has two storeys set on a stone plinth, with broadly-spaced studding and an arch brace in the right end bay. The roof is half-hipped on the left side and hipped with a gablet on the right. There is a multiple brick stack located on the front slope of the roof, off-centre to the right. The windows are irregularly arranged and consist of four casements. The doors are ribbed with very shallow hoods; one is located at the left end beneath the stack, and another is at the left end of the right bay. There is possibly a 16th or 17th-century timber-framed lean-to at the rear, and a 19th-century lean-to at the right end, which features a dormer window against the hip of the main range and contains stairs leading to the right end cottage. Inside, the cottage has plain, substantial timbers, arch-braced tie-beams, and an inglenook fireplace.
