Description

Boxley House is a house that has been converted into a hotel. It has a core from the 17th century, with additions and alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries. The building features brick facades and a plain tile roof. The garden front showcases an early 18th-century facade that complements the 17th-century core. It is constructed of red brick with occasional grey headers in Flemish bond, and consists of two storeys, attics, and a cellar, all resting on a brick plinth with a shallow stone base.

Above the first-floor windows, there is a rubbed brick plat band. The roof has a plain, stone-coped parapet that is hipped at the left end. A 17th-century brick ridge stack with six octagonal flues and moulded tops and bases sits on a square platform, slightly off-centre to the left. The facade includes four dormers with triangular pediments, four glazing bar sashes, and two two-storey bay windows. One glazing bar sash is located at the right end, and another is beneath the stack, featuring rubbed brick voussoirs, which were altered later in the 18th century.

A slightly later 18th-century addition at the left end matches the rest of the facade and includes one additional dormer and two glazing-bar sashes. The 19th-century alterations include rendered, canted bays added on either side of the stack, replacing former sashes. These bays have a plinth, a plat band above the first-floor windows, and a stone-coped parapet, with three glazing-bar sashes in each bay. The area between the bays incorporates a sash window beneath the stack, which is painted white.

There is a door case between the bays featuring fluted pilasters that support an entablature with triglyphs and a semi-circular pediment, accessed by five steps. The 19th-century addition at the right end has two storeys and a basement on a plinth, with a plat band above the first-floor windows and a stone-coped parapet. The roof is hipped to the right, and there is one glazing-bar sash on each floor with rubbed brick voussoirs. The right return elevation matches the garden front, featuring two 19th-century periods of painted brick with a regular six-window front. A 20th-century porch is also present.

The left rear wing has an elevation of early 18th-century red brick, which has been altered in the 20th century. It features one narrow first-floor window with elaborately carved rubbed red-brick voussoirs. The rear block is now largely from the 19th century. Inside, there are fragments of the 17th-century house, possibly indicating a courtyard plan, along with first-floor beams.
