Description
The Maidstone Borough War Memorial is a notable structure made of limestone, featuring a bronze figure. It is located at the junction of two main roads leading west out of Maidstone. The memorial consists of a bronze statue of St George standing triumphantly over the slain dragon, positioned on a tall cenotaph-like limestone plinth and base. Surrounding the memorial is a low stone wall.
St George is depicted in full armor, with his left foot resting on the dragon's body. He holds an erect lance in his right hand, from which a pennon flies, while in his left hand he carries a shaped shield, which also rests on the dragon.
The front face of the memorial features an inscription that reads: IN HONOUR OF / OUR GLORIOUS DEAD / WHO / GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN / THE GREAT WAR / FOR EVER HONOURED / AND / FOR EVER MOURNED / 1914 1918 / 1939 1945 / AND / IN LATER CONFLICTS.
There is an additional short inscription on the rear, and a wreath is carved in relief on either side of the plinth.
