Description

This is a row of houses dating from the 17th century or earlier, with significant alterations in the early 19th century and an addition to the right. The ground floor is built of chequered red and grey brick, while the first floor is rendered. The right-hand section also uses chequered red and grey brick. The roof is tiled. The left section is two storeys high with attics and a cellar, built on a stone plinth. The right section is two storeys high, with a lower eaves line and ridge. The left section has a hipped roof with a large gablet, while the roof of the right section is half-hipped to the right. A brick stack projects to the left, and a multiple brick ridge stack is central to the left section. There are two gabled dormers on the left section. The windows are irregular, consisting of five 16-pane sashes. Two windows are present on the right section in open boxes, and three windows are located on the left. The ground floor windows have segmental heads, and the window on the right section appears to have formerly been a shop window. There are five panelled doors with segmental heads, located towards the left end of No. 40, between Nos. 38 and 36 beneath the central stack, in No. 34, and to the left end of the shop window. A rear wing exists to the left. The interior has not been inspected.
